Modelling different scenarios for living in a thriveable built environment

Does anyone know of any projects currently focused on modelling different logistical scenarios for lower-energy alternative futures, e.g. car-sharing, high availability public transport, walkable community areas, urban agriculture (e.g. suburban yard and/or community gardens), tool libraries etc?

Maybe this would be a focus in the city/town planning departments of various local and city governments?

And if so, is this information shared publicly anywhere (e.g. as open data, as is made available for GovHack in Australia)?
